On this day in 1941, at 2.15am, James Joyce passed away in Zurich.

The Joyces had moved from France to Zurich at the outbreak of World War II.

He had been suffering with stomach pains for many months and his doctor put them down to nerves.

Joyce was taken ill with severe stomach pains on the night of January 10th 1941. He was suffering from a perforated duodenal ulcer. An operation was carried out at the Red Cross Hospital in Zurich and it appeared to be successful. However Joyce’s condition deteriorated over the following days and he died on January 13th, aged 59.

He is buried in the Fluntern Cemetery in Zurich.

Joyce once said, when talking about Ulysses, “I’ve put in so many enigmas and puzzles that it will keep the professors busy for centuries arguing over what I meant, and that’s the only way to ensure one’s immortality”.

And oh how right he was!
